Lake Wobegon Days: Doing What Comes Naturally

Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon Days provides the reader with a rich panoply of characters. This novel harkens us to the fictional town of Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, where the Latin motto on the town crest translates "We Are What We Are". Things just happen naturally in Lake Wobegon, and you've got to be ready to accept the Lord's will.

Given a large rotten tomato and an older sister bending over exposing her large backside, what's the thirteen-year-old brother to do?  In Lake Wobegon Days, the answer is ... but wait!  The mother sees what's about to happen and yells at the boy!  The soggy missile flies through the air anyway, striking its target.  That's what happens in Lake Wobegon Days.

Meet Me on the Paisley Roof harkens us to Columbus, Georgia, where three teenage boys discover a truckload of dried and somewhat aerodynamic turkey manure.  But wait, the sixteen-year-old Trussell sees what might happen and develops a plan to avoid a Lake Wobegon Days type natural disaster.  One boy becomes the "traitor", chosen by coin toss, and stands before a firing squad of the other two boys.  Does the plan to limit disaster succeed?  It's there for your reading pleasure!

These characters are also capable of "thinking" what comes naturally.  If things in Lake Wobegon are dull, then wishing for a tornado or replacing boring family members with an Italian counterpart is a welcome escape.  Lake Wobegon Days sets the standard for being what you really are.
